Microsoft Careers –  What makes Microsoft A Good Place To Work?

Microsoft Careers

With all the attention paid to tech companies such as Amazon, Facebook, and Google, it’s easy to overlook another tech giant headquartered in the U.S.: Microsoft.

Childhood pals Bill Gates and Paul Allen established Microsoft around 1975. a move that made them billionaires. In 2020, the technology firm thrived and was often bundled into the United States’ Big Five tech giants, alongside Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Google.

This year, Microsoft became the third company in American history valued at more than $1 trillion. The company is famous for its operating software and systems. However, Microsoft also made waves in 2016 when it acquired LinkedIn at $26.2 billion.

Goclassroom recently explored what it’s like working at Amazon, Google, and Facebook. So what’s it like working for Microsoft?

Unlike other technology companies, Microsoft hasn’t been involved in the same number of scandals and controversies. Additionally, it’s only sometimes criticized by the news media. But, as a massive multinational corporation, employees and former employees affirm that they are similar to those working at other large technology companies.

Microsoft offers excellent salaries, benefits and experience, exciting jobs, and the opportunity to work with highly talented individuals. But, on the flip side, Microsoft employees report that they don’t have an excellent work-life balance, and there are plenty of workplace politics.

Empire Resume sifted through several reports to give you an idea of what it’s like to work for Microsoft.

One of the Most Valuable Brands in the World

Since the 1970s, Microsoft has been more well-known, which coincides with the growth of personal computing and the internet. Following the creation of the MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows operating systems, the corporation dominated the PC market in the 1980s.

Since Microsoft went public in 1986, its share price has increased, creating three billionaires and an estimated 12,000 millionaires within its workforce. Not bad at all.

Microsoft has dramatically expanded the scope of its operations since the 1990s. Currently, the business creates, markets, and provides support for PCs, electronics, software, and a wide range of connected services. The Xbox was the company’s entry into the video game industry in 2001.

The corporation currently employs over 156,000 people worldwide. Microsoft has a market share of over 75% in the market for desktop operating systems and is one of the most valuable brands in the world.

Microsoft is reportedly a nice place to work as well. The business was placed No. 21 in Glassdoor’s 2020 Best Places to Work list. Moreover, Microsoft improved its position in the rankings compared to other significant tech firms like Facebook and Google.

Due to privacy issues and political controversies, 2019 was difficult for most internet companies, but Microsoft has primarily avoided harm. The business appeared on Glassdoor’s list of the Best Places to Work in 2019, 2018, and 2017.

On Glassdoor, Microsoft has 4.3 stars out of 5, and 89% of current and former employees say they would recommend the business to a friend. In addition, the company’s CEO, Satya Nadella, has a 98% Glassdoor approval rating and has been recognized as a top CEO in 2019, 2018, and 2017.

Excellent Compensation and Benefits

One of the best aspects of working for Microsoft is the exceptional compensation and benefits package. According to PayScale, the corporation pays its employees an annual average income of almost $119,000 per person.

Senior Attorneys at Microsoft make the maximum money, on average making close to $188,000, according to PayScale. Conversely, the lowest-paid employees are those with the title “Data Center Technician,” who earn an average yearly income of just under $55,000.

At Microsoft, roughly 47% of all job titles fall under engineering. According to Ladders, the average annual income for a Senior Software Engineer is close to $125,000.

Employees highly regard the benefits package offered by Microsoft. Employee benefits include:

  • A substantial 401(k) plan.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Student debt refinancing.
  • First-rate health insurance.

Microsoft’s corporate offices have on-campus retail stores and services, employee resource and social clubs, a shuttle service, and a fleet of company buses, just like Google and other major software firms.

Many Microsoft employees also enjoy special discounts on the company’s goods and other discounts, even on items like mortgages and auto loans. Glassdoor users rate Microsoft’s perks program 4.4 out of 5 stars overall.

CEO Garners Praise

The hiring process at Microsoft was slowing in 2020, likely because of the COVID-19 virus. The number of jobs available at the company decreased to more than 60 percent between March and the end of May, in a report from Thinknum Alternative Data. The May report stated that Microsoft offered 2,142 jobs, significantly less than what was available in the early 2020s.

In the job openings, Microsoft has the company searching for engineers and developers in the field, as per Dice. The most sought-after skills for potential Microsoft hires are Microsoft Azure and Software engineering development.

Similar to other tech giants like Google, most Microsoft workers will likely work remotely for the next few years due to the spread of the virus. However, like some of his executives, Nadella CEO Nadella is a small fan of remote working. Dice says that Microsoft employees will likely be back at work when the pandemic has ended.

One reason Microsoft has received many positive reviews from its employees is Nadella, who took over as CEO in 2014. Many employees say that working at Microsoft is much more pleasant under Nadella than the former Chief Executive Officer, Steve Ballmer.

A large part of this is that the company is performing well. Under Nadella’s guidance, Microsoft stock tripled by September 2018, with an annual rate of 27 percent. Employees also love Nadella due to his ability to change Microsoft’s culture. Nadella has focused on empathy, a growth mindset, and teamwork since becoming the CEO.

Employee Burnout and Office Politics

Although Microsoft employees generally seem happy, there are a few aspects of working at Microsoft that people complain about. One of those is the balance between work and life.

Work/life balance is said to have improved under Nadella, the CEO. Nadella has been vocal about the balance between work and family and suggested people use the term “harmony” instead of “balance.” What he’s referring to by this is having a sense of passion and meaning behind what is being worked on and preventing burning out.

However, certain Microsoft employees claim to find themselves exhausted working for a technology company that requires employees to be hard workers. Employees gave Microsoft a C+ for work/life balance. On the other hand, with 70% of the employees say they worked at least 10 hours a day.

In various reviews of the company, others have outlined some negatives, such as the extent of office politics, the difficulty in navigating the bureaucracy that comes with working for an enterprise of this size, and the risk of the possibility of stagnation in a career.

Every organization has its internal policies. However, some employees stated on Glassdoor that they’ve experienced it especially badly at Microsoft. For example, one reviewer noted that there’s a “fair amount of political infighting,” and another said that “your career can excel a lot more if you align with the right manager” and sip the Microsoft Kool-Aid.

Microsoft offers many opportunities to participate in exciting projects. However, employees have complained that the work environment is intense. In addition, certain employees on Glassdoor claim it is easy to let your career stagnate in the company due to being stuck on projects with limited visibility.

Microsoft employs algorithms for its recruitment which is why having the appropriate keywords is crucial.

Microsoft is on a Hot Streak

Microsoft has quietly been enjoying a resurgence over the last few years compared to other technology companies. Its acquisition of LinkedIn in 2016 is the biggest in the history of Microsoft, and, according to most reports, it’s been a success.

Microsoft is also on the news recently following the announcement that it’s holding talks to buy the social media application TikTok from a Chinese technology company. It’s yet to be decided whether the deal will be approved and whether it’s an opportunity or a devastation.

While there are some issues, Microsoft employees are unhappy about them. But on the other hand, most employees are happy working for the technology giant. Microsoft offers excellent wages and benefits, and most employees have high praise for Nadella, the CEO at present.
